Chasing After Light in the Darkness

Light is not only one of the main sources of photography but also one of the most important sources to the earth. It provides some sense of survival and hopes to everything in the earth after darkness. I still remember when my sifu taught me about it during a camping trip in Gunung Nuang last year. He told me when light falls on the huge fallen tree trunk, it would be a nice place for photography. Have you ever thought of why some of the photos we capture look so dull without sense of liveness or freshness? I did ponder about that question once upon a time. My sifu gave me some hints on this. Perhaps, that's the reason why I keep chasing after the light nowadays. Photography is all about light.

The Open Window

Freedom is the open window through which pours the sunlight of the human spirit and human dignity. - Herbert Hoover -

The golden hours for photography would be the first or two hours after sunrise and before sunset. It provides great range of contrast when the golden soft light hitting to your subject compared to mid-day sunlight and cloudy days. There are some exceptional moments too when mid day sun light provide interesting shots. Perhaps, you can try a macro shot of flower when the sunlight hitting on the flower and another sample shot of flower without sunlight hitting on it. You may find it interesting on the shot when sunlight hitting on the flower, the contrast level is different compared to the one without sunlight. My friend and I were trying on this on mid day, it was a fun trying and experimenting. The sample shots was in her camera though.

This is one of my favourite shots in my melaka trip last weekend. I like the old man's expression who was sitting on his motor in Jonker Walk, it seems he has a lot of story to tell through his eye sights. Perhaps, that's life and having his tobbacco. He was in deep thinking, I guess.

I am regretting of not including his motor inside the frame. I know the problem of me chasing the sunset lighting too much and ignoring the other factors. This is back lighting, I like how the light hitting on his back and hair. "Perhaps, that's life", I still love the way he looks at things.

These are the light we don't have to chase after as we have controlling power over them. You may refer to one of the articles contributed by a kind photography lover on the following link: http://www.dslrfanclub.com/resources/camera-equipment/147-diy-studio-that-less-than-rm-50.html . It's a good start for more creative ideas. Happy experimenting!
