History about Gunung Ledang

Refered to as Mount Ophir in the days of the British, Gunung Ledang's history reveals that it was the site of rich gold deposits, luring traders from as far as Greece and China the name 'ophir' itself is through to have originated from an ancient Hebrew word.In the 14th century, the Chinese admiral Zheng He (Cheng Ho) called it 'Gunung Kim Sua' meaning the 'Golden Mountain". Then during the great Javanese empire of Majapahit, the Javanese named it 'Gunung Ledang' which means 'mount from afar'. Whatever name it was called before, to the locals Gunung Ledang is no ordinary mountain.

Locals believe it is the abode of Puteri Gunung Ledang or the legendary 'Mountain Princess'. Her story is the kind that forms the inspiration of soulful songs and mesmerising drama scenes.

Puteri Gunung Ledang, according to local folklore, was a beautiful princess from Sumatra who sought refuge in the mointain after a failed marriage. She captivated the heart of the already-married Sultan Mahmud Shah of Malacca during the 15th century. He wanted to marry her. So she set impossible conditions for him - to build a golden and a silver bridge linking his palace in Malacca to the mountain,to bring her seven trays of the hearts of mosquitoes, seven jars of tears and a bowl of the Sultan's son's blood. The Sultan, so the story goes, was able to fulfill all except the last. Thus, the princess continued to live alone on her beloved mountain, a guardian to nature goes, was able to fulfill all except the last. Thus, the princess continued to live alone on her beloved mountain, a guardian to nature seekers but protective enough of her mountain to send disrespectful visitors lose their way!.

That's all for the history of Gunung Ledang, back to the waterfall now.
